Bears are a fact of life in Montana, especially so in Glacier Park. The book 'Bear Aware' covers bear safety while Hiking and Camping in Bear Country by Bill Schneider.

Day Hikes in the North Fork Area

All of the North Fork trails, lakes and campgrounds
are only accessible by gravel road

Inner North Road is open sometime in late August 2011.

North Fork

Inside North Fork Road opened on Monday, May 17, 2010. As of June 6, 2010 the Inner North Fork Road was open from Fish Creek Campground to Kintla Lake. One small section of the road some 19 miles north of Fish creek is dangerously Undercut by the north fork of the Flathead River. Eventually this section of the road will disappear without warning into the North Fork River. Getting to a trailhead to hike in the North Fork area of Glacier National Park is more of a challenge than anywhere else in the Park. I'm not including the Goat Haunt area since you will need a passport to hike on those trails. You will need to carefully study the North Fork map to locate these trail heads. From the West Glacier area of Glacier National Park take the road to the Fish Creek Campground, just before entering the campground there is a dirt road on the left. This is the Inner North Fork Road. When it's dry this road can be VERY dusty. Over the last few years this road has been closed more then it has been open. In 2007 the road did not re-open until September.

From the Polebridge area the Inner North Fork Road is the first right hand turn after entering through the North Fork Entrance Station.

Bowman Lake Trails and Kintla Lake Trails are to the left after entering Glacier National Park through the North Fork Entrance Station. Kintla Lake is fifteen miles from the Polebridge entrance and Bowman Lake is five miles from the Polebridge entrance.
